22 Year Old Gymnast Gets New Life After Neck Injury

Doctors at SaiShree Hospital saved life of a 22 years old gymnast from Pune, Vijay Ingale, who fell on neck while his routine practice sessions and was complaining of neck stiffness and pain. On getting x-rays, he was diagnosed to have dislocation of 4th cervical vertebra over 5th. Fractures or dislocations around this region of the spine are either fatal or associated with partial to complete paralysis of all 4 limbs. Luckily this patient despite of having a dislocation in his cervical spine did not suffered any injury to the spinal cord.

Similar case of 20 years old wrestler from Kolhapur, Nilesh Kandurkar where his opponent grabbed him by the waist and lifted him in the air in a wrestling move known as the ‘Ekchak’.  Nilesh in trying to free himself landed on his neck with full force and the impact was so powerful that he became unconscious. Doctors confirmed that, Nilesh had suffered neck and spinal cord damage due to the massive impact on landing and he died due to delayed treatment.

Dr. PaiRaiturkar, Spine Surgeon at Sai Shree Hospital, said, “Vijay’s case was very challenging.  ‘Crutchfield tongs’ which consist of 2 pins inserted in the skull bone and attached to a pulley, were applied and gradual traction was given. Patient had to be monitored continuously to watch for any deterioration of neurological function. The traction was increased gradually and portable x-rays were taken every 30 minutes till reduction of the vertebra was achieved.”

Dr. Ketan Deshpande Spine Surgeon, Sai Shree Hospital said, “High index of suspicion is necessary in diagnosing such cases. Lack of knowledge may prompt the patient to opt for neck massaging, or manipulation which could be devastating in such hidden injuries.”

After reduction patient was taken for open surgery where the dislocated vertebrae were fused together using bone graft, plates & screws. “Due to prompt diagnosis and treatment we could successfully mobilized the patient on the next day and he was discharged after 4 days.” said Dr. Neeraj Adkar, Director and Joint Replacement Surgeon, Sai Shree Hospital.

Kolhapur – Pune Green Corridor Facilitates Liver Transplant

A green corridor was created on May 5 between Aster Adhar Hospital Kolhapur to Jupiter Hospital Pune to save the life of a 60-year-old patient suffering from the end stages of liver disease. The distance was covered in less than three hours with the help of the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) and traffic police; it usually takes Six hours.

The traffic team, led by Mr. Vishwas Nagare Patil, IGP Kolhapur and Mr. Ashok Morale, DCP Pune. And more than 100 policemen created the green corridor by stopping the traffic and allowing free and continue passage to the vehicle transporting the liver.

The liver was harvested in Kolhapur at noon and was in Baner Pune here by 7.30 pm. The 33-year-old donor was declared brain dead on May4 after the road accident on 30th April. His family volunteered to donate his organs, which gave new life to a patient from Pune. The patient donated three organs, heart to Mumbai, Liver to Pune, 1 kidney in Kolhapur and 2nd kidney to Solapur. The liver transplant was performed by a team of surgeons headed by Dr. Sharan Narute, Jupiter Hospital, Baner.

Dr. Sharan Narute, Liver Transplant Surgeon of Jupiter Hospitals said, “The decision by brain dead patient’s family to donate his liver to a needy patient is also worth appreciating. It is very important to note that, through organ donation one man can give a new lease of life to another man. Jupiter Hospital is trying its level best to increase awareness about organ donation.”

Dr. Sunil Rao, Chief Operating Officer, Jupiter Hospitals Baner said, “Society will get benefited if more people like this come forward for organ donation”.

The patient had undergone a living donor liver transplantation 1 month back for chronic liver disease due to fatty liver. Patient had recurrent hospital admissions because of gastrointestinal bleeds, his daughter had donated a part of the liver the patient had a smooth recovery and was discharged home. However, a month later, there was sudden deterioration in the liver function because of poor supply, we appealed to ZTCC pune for super urgent listing and they agreed for as it was the only life saving measure.

Usually it takes 6 hours to travel from Nashik to Pune, thanks to the green corridor created by traffic police this transportation was achieved in just 3 hours. We thank Mr. Vishwas Nagare Patil, IGP Kolhapur, Mr. Ashok Morale, DCP Pune, and Pune and Kolhapur traffic control team, for creating this green corridor. “OPULENT” – High Flexion Gold Knee Joint System implanted at Saishree Hospital!

The renowned Hip and Knee Replacement Surgeon Dr. Neeraj Adkar, successfully implanted “Opulent” the high flexion Gold Knee joint system in Knee replacement surgery at SaiShree Hospital for Special Surgery, Aundh in presence of Dr. Carl Becker from Lancaster, PA United States.

The OPULENT Bionik Gold surface is for allergy and wear protection of knee implant. Macroscopically, the Bionik Gold surface presents a metallic, light golden yellow appearance whereby the coating forms an extremely strong bond with the implant. In addition to Opulent Gold knee surgery, cobalt–chromium–molybdenum alloy (CoCrMo) is one of the most important materials used in orthopedic applications.

Advantage of OPULENT Bionik Gold Technique

Outstanding biocompatibility
Allergy preventive
Hardness superior to cobalt chromium-based alloys
Higher wettability with synovial fluids
Low Friction articulation
Long-term chemical stability
Avoids inflammation and endoprosthetic loosening
Extreme adhesive strength

The CoCrMo with its proven efficacy has been a regular choice for knee replacement implant material more than a decade. An advanced technology process of coasting of inert material “TiNbN” is an icing on the cake providing high flexion, best in class biocompatibility and longevity on opulent besides the regular properties of CoCrMo.

“The implant used for this surgery has a gold colored Titanium-Nitride/Zirconium nitride coating. Not only does the golden knee implant prevents any allergic reaction with the body, but also, is more durable and has a longer life. After knee replacement most of the patients are able to perform their daily routine within few weeks”. said Dr. Neeraj Adkar

He further said, Candidacy for a knee replacement is not based on age, but on the person’s level of pain and immobility. Living with a painful joint that prohibits you from working or participating in normal life activities is an outdated way of thinking so OPULENT knee technique is best choice for patients.

“In India, their lifestyle requires them to use their knees a lot, typically they don't exercise enough; they are skinny and have poor bone mass. All of this leads to the need for knee replacements.”  Said Dr. Carl E. Becker, MD Orthopedic Surgery

He added further, In India, bone health is a huge issue and people are largely unaware of the importance of nutrition, vitamins and minerals to develop peak bone mass.

The acclaimed Hip and Knee Replacement Surgeon Dr. Neeraj Adkar has myriad successful knee implants cases per year in his kitty & is known all over for his contribution covering a gamut of orthopedic operational skills, patient care, education and research etc.
