22 Year Old Gymnast Gets New Life After Neck Injury

Doctors at SaiShree Hospital saved life of a 22 years old gymnast from Pune, Vijay Ingale, who fell on neck while his routine practice sessions and was complaining of neck stiffness and pain. On getting x-rays, he was diagnosed to have dislocation of 4th cervical vertebra over 5th. Fractures or dislocations around this region of the spine are either fatal or associated with partial to complete paralysis of all 4 limbs. Luckily this patient despite of having a dislocation in his cervical spine did not suffered any injury to the spinal cord.

Similar case of 20 years old wrestler from Kolhapur, Nilesh Kandurkar where his opponent grabbed him by the waist and lifted him in the air in a wrestling move known as the ‘Ekchak’.  Nilesh in trying to free himself landed on his neck with full force and the impact was so powerful that he became unconscious. Doctors confirmed that, Nilesh had suffered neck and spinal cord damage due to the massive impact on landing and he died due to delayed treatment.

Dr. PaiRaiturkar, Spine Surgeon at Sai Shree Hospital, said, “Vijay’s case was very challenging.  ‘Crutchfield tongs’ which consist of 2 pins inserted in the skull bone and attached to a pulley, were applied and gradual traction was given. Patient had to be monitored continuously to watch for any deterioration of neurological function. The traction was increased gradually and portable x-rays were taken every 30 minutes till reduction of the vertebra was achieved.”

Dr. Ketan Deshpande Spine Surgeon, Sai Shree Hospital said, “High index of suspicion is necessary in diagnosing such cases. Lack of knowledge may prompt the patient to opt for neck massaging, or manipulation which could be devastating in such hidden injuries.”

After reduction patient was taken for open surgery where the dislocated vertebrae were fused together using bone graft, plates & screws. “Due to prompt diagnosis and treatment we could successfully mobilized the patient on the next day and he was discharged after 4 days.” said Dr. Neeraj Adkar, Director and Joint Replacement Surgeon, Sai Shree Hospital.

Kolhapur – Pune Green Corridor Facilitates Liver Transplant

A green corridor was created on May 5 between Aster Adhar Hospital Kolhapur to Jupiter Hospital Pune to save the life of a 60-year-old patient suffering from the end stages of liver disease. The distance was covered in less than three hours with the help of the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) and traffic police; it usually takes Six hours.

The traffic team, led by Mr. Vishwas Nagare Patil, IGP Kolhapur and Mr. Ashok Morale, DCP Pune. And more than 100 policemen created the green corridor by stopping the traffic and allowing free and continue passage to the vehicle transporting the liver.

The liver was harvested in Kolhapur at noon and was in Baner Pune here by 7.30 pm. The 33-year-old donor was declared brain dead on May4 after the road accident on 30th April. His family volunteered to donate his organs, which gave new life to a patient from Pune. The patient donated three organs, heart to Mumbai, Liver to Pune, 1 kidney in Kolhapur and 2nd kidney to Solapur. The liver transplant was performed by a team of surgeons headed by Dr. Sharan Narute, Jupiter Hospital, Baner.

Dr. Sharan Narute, Liver Transplant Surgeon of Jupiter Hospitals said, “The decision by brain dead patient’s family to donate his liver to a needy patient is also worth appreciating. It is very important to note that, through organ donation one man can give a new lease of life to another man. Jupiter Hospital is trying its level best to increase awareness about organ donation.”

Dr. Sunil Rao, Chief Operating Officer, Jupiter Hospitals Baner said, “Society will get benefited if more people like this come forward for organ donation”.

The patient had undergone a living donor liver transplantation 1 month back for chronic liver disease due to fatty liver. Patient had recurrent hospital admissions because of gastrointestinal bleeds, his daughter had donated a part of the liver the patient had a smooth recovery and was discharged home. However, a month later, there was sudden deterioration in the liver function because of poor supply, we appealed to ZTCC pune for super urgent listing and they agreed for as it was the only life saving measure.

Usually it takes 6 hours to travel from Nashik to Pune, thanks to the green corridor created by traffic police this transportation was achieved in just 3 hours. We thank Mr. Vishwas Nagare Patil, IGP Kolhapur, Mr. Ashok Morale, DCP Pune, and Pune and Kolhapur traffic control team, for creating this green corridor. Also role of Dr Somnath Chatterjee and Dr Sharan Narute liver transplant team, Ms. Aarti Gokhale, ZTCC Central Coordinator and Mr. Sagar Kakad, coordinator Jupiter Hospital, Baner was very instrumental in coordinating the entire green corridor.
